Caring for Oak and Walnut Furniture: Cleaning, Oiling and Seasons

A soft cloth and wax on a quarter-sawn oak tabletop beside a walnut box in warm window light

Quick answer: Dust with a soft dry cloth, wipe spills quickly, keep pieces out of direct sun, and wax or oil once or twice a year. Keep indoor humidity between 35% and 55%. Light scratches can be hidden with a matching wax stick or a little oil.

Oak tables

Use coasters on a solid oak table to avoid rings.

Sideboards

Rotate decor on a sideboard to prevent sun marks.

Bookcases

Spread heavy books along a bookcase.

Seasons

Expect slight seasonal movement — it's natural.

How oak and walnut differ in daily care

Both are strong hardwoods, but they react a little differently to light, scratches and cleaning.

Oak

  • Open grain can trap dust; use a soft brush attachment or a dry cloth worked along the grain.
  • Oak darkens and warms gently over the years, especially with oil finishes.
  • Scratches often blend into the strong grain, so oak is a forgiving choice for busy family tables.

Walnut

  • Walnut's fine grain shows fingerprints and dust more easily; buff with a dry microfiber cloth.
  • Strong sun can lighten walnut over time, so rotate decor and keep it out of direct window light.
  • Light scratches show as pale lines; a little oil or a walnut-toned wax stick hides them.

A seasonal plan for Southwest Virginia

The mountains bring humid summers and cold, dry, heated winters. Run a dehumidifier or A/C from June to August and a humidifier when the heat is on, aiming for 35–55% indoor humidity. Oil or wax tabletops in late fall before heating season and again in spring.

Refreshing an oiled finish

Clean the surface with a damp, well-wrung cloth and let it dry. Apply a thin coat of furniture oil with a lint-free rag, wait 15 minutes, then wipe off all the excess. Repeat after 24 hours on very dry spots. This works on the oiled pieces in our tables & desks and bookcases, all newly built in heritage styles.
